This word counter updates live as you type. It counts words, characters with and without spaces, sentences and paragraphs, and estimates how long your text takes to read silently (at 238 words per minute) or to say out loud (at 150 words per minute).
It is useful for essays with a word limit, social media posts with character limits, meta descriptions, cover letters and speeches. Nothing you paste is uploaded – all counting happens in your browser.
How words are counted
A word is any run of letters or numbers separated by spaces or punctuation, so hyphenated words like “well-known” count as one word and contractions like “don't” count as one. Sentences are counted by ending punctuation (. ! ?), and paragraphs by blank-line or line-break separated blocks of text.
