Colour formats explained
- HEX (#3b82f6) is the most common format in CSS and design tools.
- RGB sets red, green and blue from 0–255 – how screens produce colour.
- HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness, which makes it easy to create lighter or darker variants.
- CMYK describes cyan, magenta, yellow and black ink for printing. Conversions are approximate because real ink depends on the printer profile.
Questions
How do I find the HEX code of a colour on my screen?
In Chrome and Edge, click the colour box to open the picker and use its eyedropper to sample any pixel on your screen.
Why does my printed colour look different?
Screens mix light (RGB) while printers mix ink (CMYK), and some bright screen colours cannot be printed exactly.
Can I type colour names?
You can type HEX, rgb() or hsl() values into the matching field.
