A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of some data. The same input always gives the same hash, so hashes are used to check downloads and compare data.
Questions
Can a hash be reversed?
No. Hashes are one-way – though weak passwords can be guessed by trying common ones.
Should I use MD5?
Only for checksums. For anything security-related use SHA-256 or better.
