HEIC is the photo format iPhones and iPads use by default. It stores high-quality photos in about half the space of a JPG, but Windows, Android, many websites and print shops can’t open it. AVIF is the newest mainstream image format, based on the AV1 video codec. It gives the smallest files of all at the same quality, but support outside browsers is still patchy.
